How-to: Successful Shopping for Toys this Holiday Season!

The holiday season is quickly approaching! That means if you haven't already, it is time to start researching the toys you will be buying for the holidays for your children and other friends and family!

Researching toys before you buy them is a great way to avoid disappointment later on! It is so helpful to learn from other moms and dads what toys their children enjoyed, any difficulties they had, and their personal thoughts on them! I have always been one to research nearly everything I buy and around the holidays it is no exception!

When you are planning for the holidays, keep this process in mind:
1) Research the hottest toys this season, keeping in mind your child's wish list. Thorough research and keeping in mind your child's interests will ensure both of you are happy on Christmas morning, and for months to come! Check out sites like Fisher-Price to read toy reviews from real parents!

2) Make a list of your top toy must-haves. Make sure to include a back-up list in case the toys you plan to buy are not available due to demand! If you are a procrastinator like me, this can easily become a reality inching up closer to Christmas. If you provide your child's wish list to other family members and friends, make sure that you have taken off the items you plan to purchase to avoid unnecessary duplicates!

3) Search online and in flyers (and catalogs) to find the best deal. Planning ahead will make holiday shopping faster, easier, less stressful, and can save you money! Websites like webSaver.ca may partner with well-known brands such as Fisher-Price to offer you great coupons to make your buying experience even better!

4) Gather your list of things to buy (and where to buy them), along with coupons, and head to the stores to take on the crowds! Remember to stick to your list and have fun!

Celebrate & Save with Fisher-Price this holiday season!  Make sure to check out webSaver.ca for a complete list of Fisher-Price/Mattel toy coupons. These coupons range from $5-$15 off and expire December 31, 2012, which makes them perfect for this holiday season! Make sure to plan ahead and order your coupons before these offers run out; this promotion is only available until November 30, 2012!

We have a number of the toys offered in the promotion in our house and Lyla loves them! If you are planning your child's wish list, make sure to check out my My Little Snugabunny Cradle ‘N’ Swing Review, Laugh & Learn Stride-to-Ride Puppy Review, Stand-Up Ballcano Review, and the Luv U Zoo Jumperoo Review to see what we thought of these great Fisher-Price toys!

Our personal favourite is the Amazing Animals Sing-Along Choo Choo, which features a fun musical train with three of your favourite Disney Baby characters!  This great train offers musical fun (with hits from the movies) and hours of enjoyment for your little one!

Hopefully this is a great start or chance to re-organize your thoughts for this holiday's toy shopping! What tips do you have leading into the holiday shopping season?

'In the Kitchen' Archive Fridays: Meal Planning 101

Welcome to the second  installment of 'In the Kitchen' Archive Fridays!  Today I'm featuring an article on Meal Planning written by Jessie from Vanderbilt Wife!  Make sure to scroll to the bottom of this post for an update on Jessie's blog!

Enjoy!

"Welcome to Everything 'In the Kitchen' Up Close's very first guest article! Today, Jessie from Vanderbilt Wife will talk to you about her experience with meal planning. Jessie has created a six step guide to help get you started!  Read her words below to find out the tips and tricks she uses to plan meals for her family:

My mom rarely planned meals. When I was in middle school and high school, she would often call me and ask me to defrost meat, get out stuff for meatloaf, or throw together her pineapple chicken recipe. Sometimes it was a stop at Ukrop’s, our local grocery store, on the way home from her full-time job. They had a great selection of prepared foods. Or maybe Dad brought home Chinese food or Taco Bell.

If you have the funds, it’s not such a bad way to eat. But I got married at 22 and became the wife of a graduate student. We didn’t have the money to eat impulsively. So, out of necessity, I started meal planning.

Over the years, I’ve discovered there are two real methods of meal planning: the cheapskate and the non-cheapskate [way]. It’s just been in the past few months (since I had my first baby and then went back to work) that we’ve moved to the true cheapskate plan. It’s not quite as fun or easy, but it works. If you don’t care about saving money, just skip the first two steps here (although in this economy, it certainly can’t hurt to pinch some pennies).

So when I sit down to meal plan, here’s the process I go through:

1.) Cut coupons from Sunday’s circulars. I only cut out the coupons for items I think I would use—IF the coupon made the item cheaper than a generic (or if I am partial to that specific brand … our dishwasher rebels if we use anything but Cascade Complete, for example).

2.) Scour the grocery store ads. I make a list of the great deals as I go through the ads for the two grocery stores I frequent (and occasionally Aldi, if I need a lot of staples). Usually the ads will remind me of a coupon I just cut, and I make sure to make a note of the coupon by the sale price.

3.) Create your menu. If you’re going the cheapskate route, use the best deals from the ads to make your meals. Ingredients might remind you of a favorite dinner, or you can use the ingredient search on AllRecipes.com to find a new creation! If you’re not as worried about saving money, you can start here by making our your menu list for meals you’d enjoy that week. I plan 5 meals a week, because it is just my husband and me eating real food and I know we’ll eat leftovers some nights. I try to limit waste of food and time. Can you make rice for a side dish on Monday, and then have fried rice on Wednesday? If so, make it all Monday and set aside the extra to refrigerate before you serve it. Extra baked chicken can be cubed or shredded for a casserole. Leftover vegetables can all be thrown into a bag in the freezer and brought out later for soup or to make vegetable stock.

Some people use the same tried-and-true recipes all the time; I am crazy about trying out new recipes, so I am constantly looking through cookbooks, magazines, and food blogs for new ideas.

I sketch out which day of the week we will eat each meal, but if I don’t feel like eating the meal assigned to that day, I just make something else I have the ingredients for instead of getting take-out or having to run to the grocery store again.

4.) Make your grocery list. Look at all your recipes and make a list of the items you don’t have already in your pantry or fridge. I sort these out by section of the grocery store, so I don’t find myself wandering all over the place once I’m there. Note to yourself if you have a coupon for an item. If you’re cheapskating, you need to sort your list according to stores as well. I usually end up going to two stores to get the best deals. Add anything you need for lunches, breakfast, snacks, and toiletries to your list.

5.) Shop! For me, shopping once a week works. I would advise you to try to narrow it down to once or twice a week, because you will save money.

6.) Prepare. If there are items that will take a long amount of time to prepare, and all the adults in your household work, go ahead and make those items on the weekend or when you have time.

Menu planning is such a habit for me I can’t imagine ever going without it! It saves us time, money, and sanity, and gives me more time to spend with my daughter because I’m not running out to the store or a restaurant every night. If I’m not going to get home from work on time, I can direct my husband to the recipe and ingredients so he can start preparation or get dinner in the oven. If you aren’t menu planning now, give it a test run one week and see how it works for you! "

Update:When Jessie wrote this article, she was mother to 4-month old Libbie.  Now, two years later, there is a new addition: a darling little boy named David born in December of 2010 (Congratulations Jessie!).  Jessie is still keeps busy writing her tales of being a stay-at-home-mom and housewife on her blog: Vanderbilt Wife.  On Mondays, make sure to head over to Vanderbilt Wife for 'Meal Planning Mondays' to see what Jessie has planned for her family for the week.  She also shares yummy recipes with her readers on a regular basis!  One recent recipe that looks amazing is the Blueberry-Lemon Ricotta Muffins.  You can find Jessie's complete compilation of recipes in her Recipe Index.  I also suggest checking out her Chocolate Avocado Cake post, which contains a whole bunch of great recipes from the bloggers of the Secret Recipe Club.

Vanderbilt Wife is a great blog that I definitely recommend checking out!  Jessie offers many great articles on both cooking and motherhood.  This blog is a must read for anyone who likes to cook or bake, or has small children!  Being interested in both topics myself, I found myself reading article after article at Vanderbilt Wife (and I have a ton bookmarked for later!).  Hopefully you'll find yourself doing the same during your visit!

A Trip to Michaels for Wedding Stuff (Printable Coupons Included)

As I've mentioned before, I have shopped at Michaels Craft Stores several times this year for wedding related purchases. And yet again, I was off to Michaels today to pick up a few more things (mainly for our centerpieces). Right now we have lanterns that we are using but we want to have frosted glass instead of see-through glass. So, we've been experimenting with a product called Armor Etch, which is used to frost glass. Today we went to Michaels to buy more so that we can finish frosting our lanterns. It's a time consuming, tedious, and relatively expensive job (for the amount of etching we
are doing), but thank goodness there are some
great Michaels coupons out there to help ease the pain.

Also, I had been going back and forth about what we were going to do for our guest book.  Like many things in our wedding, I want it to be original - definitely not the same as every other wedding!  I came across something called The Perfect Pair by Weddingstar that I thought would be great but my better half wasn't convinced.  I love the idea of having our guests writing personalized messages to us but my fiancé doesn't think that everyone would be up to it.

So, while at Michaels, we found a product that is perfect for our wedding...and we got a fabulous deal on it!  It is a signature photo mat!  This is great because our guests can choose to sign only there name, write a short message, or a long message - the possibilities are endless!  The one we decided on includes a 16x20" frame and it has space for a 8x10" photograph.  It is similar to the picture I have included in this post but ours came with a black frame and in my opinion, higher quality.  Underneath the photo, there is an opening that we can write something special in (e.g. Established in 2010, ...).  We ended up getting this for just over $13, which in mind is fabulous!  This frame was specifically marketed for graduations so they were clearing them out at 70% off (reg. $39.99).  Luckily, there is nothing on the frame or the matting that signifies it as graduation specific so this item could easily be used for weddings, or other special events.  What I'm most happy about is the fact that we are both happy with it and we'll be able to use it in a practical way for years to come; much better than just remembering our wedding day and our guests on each anniversary!

This week, I'd like to share a couple of Michaels coupons* with you. Both of these coupons expire on Friday, July 30th.
- 40% off any regular priced item
- 60% off your custom framing order
*Some exceptions apply. Please read the fine print located on each printable coupon for more details.

Click here to download and print your Michaels coupons, courtesy of the Bargain Moose.

Remember, to check your weekly paper for additional money saving coupons from Michaels Craft Stores.

*Note: this is NOT a sponsored post.  This is just a bit of information that I wanted to share because I thought it would be fitting for my readers and the Everything Up Close Bridal Shower event.

Pampers - Gifts to Grow Code!

First of all, I apologize for the interruption to the Everything Up Close Bridal Shower - as you can see, this post is not at all wedding related! Although I don't have any children (and no I'm not with child), I love to save money. Since I have nieces, nephews, and children I babysit, I'm always looking to save $ on the gifts I get them. Pampers Gifts to Grow program is a great way to do that. All you have to do is collect points online to redeem for free gifts, gift cards, and more!

Right now there is a great code worth a whopping 200 points. If you haven't signed up for the program, I urge you to do so here. If you are signed up, head on over, sign in, and enter your code!

I'm pretty sure the code will only be available for a short time since it is associated with a Twitter party.

The code is .... TWITTERPARTYWTP!

This code is now expired.

Michaels' Coupons for July 10 - 16

I was looking for some Micheals' coupons yesterday that were valid for this weekend and I was having quite a challenge (compared to usual). I wanted to go buy a easel for the beautiful personalized wedding plate I had a chance to review from Herman's Creations awhile back, and a bridal scrapbook to hold the scrapbooking pages I'm making starting from our engagement to the wedding reception (possibly the honeymoon as well).

Since getting engaged, I have been to Micheals several times for ideas and supplies. They have items that are fabulous for everything from parties (engagement, etc.), the bridal shower, the ceremony, the reception, the honeymoon, and more! Plus, they are fabulous for any brides looking to add DIY projects into their wedding or document their trip down the aisle.

So, to make saving money at Michaels easier for everyone else, I'm posting this week's printable Micheals coupons.

The coupons for this week include,
- 40% off one (1) regular priced items (see coupon for exceptions)
- 55% off your custom framing order (see coupon for exceptions)

Both coupons are valid in the US and Canada and they are being accepted Saturday, July 10 through Friday, July 16th.  Click here to print your coupons.

Happy Shopping!

London Drugs Coupon Stacking (My 2/19/2010 Shop)

I haven't gone to London Drugs for a shopping trip in awhile.  Of course, not because I didn't want to (I love London Drugs) but it seemed that we were pretty well stocked up on most things.  Yesterday I worked on organizing some coupons into my coupon binder and looking at sales flyers.  Since London Drugs has some awesome sales on this week, I had to make my way there before the sale was over.

Here's what I bought:
1 - Electrasol/FINISH Powerball (25-pack)
2 - Aveeno Body Wash (Full size)
1 - Bounty (2-pack)
1 - Tampax Pearl (18-pack)
1 - Tampax Pearl (36-pack + 20 bonus Always liners)
1 - Tylenol Muscle Aches and Body Pains (72-pack) *For this product, I used a $2 off coupon from my list of printable Canadian coupons
3 - Dove Shampoos (Full size)
2 - Pantene Pro-V 2-in-1 shampoos (Full size)
1 - Charmin (4-pack double roll)

Total Spent:
$14.41 ($6.53 of which was tax)
Total Saved (coupons): $57.99

Helpful Hint of the Day: Save even more money by making a list of things to buy before you go to the store.  This will help you avoid impulse buys and it will allow you to save more money by shopping according to current sales.  When making your shopping list, make sure to check out prices on London Drug's website to make sure you are getting the best deal.  For the most part, the dollar amount you see online will usually be the same price charged in-store.  By browsing their website first, you will also learn about the brands that London Drugs carries.  If you aren't brand loyal, this is a great option for saving more money.  As for sales, coupons, and London Drugs, I have to get the product for free or almost free to buy it (usually less than $1.50 per product - of course, depending on the type of product).  That is unless I really really need it.  Note: If the item you want is something that can wait, wait until it goes on sale!

As always, I hope that my posts about saving money help you to realize that their are tons of ways to help you save money on your variable costs (e.g. groceries, personal care products, etc.).  Remember, coupons aren't useless or worthless.  Truth is - Coupons can save you tons of money if you know how to use them!

Do you have a question or a comment about coupons, or saving money in general?  Please feel free to post it below and I'll happily reply to the best of my ability.

If you post your savings on a blog, I'd love those links as well!

Do you want to know how you can save money at London Drugs?  If so, visit my first London Drugs post, which gives some tips on how to save: HERE.  You can also try and increase your savings by visiting my printable coupon list.
