Fisher-Price sent me one of their new Laugh & Learn Apptivity Cases to try out first hand. The purpose of the Apptivity Case is to help protect your iPhone or iPod with the special baby/child friendly case. The case is constructed from solid plastic and has a compartment that safely stores away your device (compatible with all generations of iPhones and iPod touches).
The plastic front cover is great because it ensures that your device is protected from drooling babies and sticky fingers. Also, the front plastic cover covers the main button to ensure that your child can't switch to different apps or make unwanted and unexpected calls. The back of the case has a lock to as an extra safety to make sure your device won't fall out while your little one is playing (and learning). Fisher-Price has even included textured handles to make holding the case even easier for little hands.
Besides being able to use the Apptivity Case for learning games, the Apptivity Case features rattle beads on the textured handles (perfect for practicing fine motor skills), and a high-quality mirror on the back of the case (babies love to look at themselves and this helps with self-discovery). All these features combined make for a iAccessory that all families with young children should have.
When I received this item in the mail, I thought it was super neat! I had never seen a toy like this and since I know of many families who let their children learn and be entertained with their iPhones and iPods, this just makes sense! Lyla is still a bit too young to be exploring either device just yet but since me and my husband are both iUsers, I'm sure that day will come very soon!
I really like the safety that this case provides. It seems to be made solid and the lock on the back is an extra piece of security. In the past I have even dropped my iPhone and actually cracked the front glass pretty bad; my husband teases me that I should have been using this case all along!
I also like that this case offers extra features aside from holding an iDevice. I'm sure that the beads on the sides and the textured handles will be used for entertaining my little one and teething when the time comes. The mirror on the back will be perfect for entertaining Lyla since she already loves any mirror we put in front of her.
Overall, I am really happy with the Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case. There isn't much I would change. The only thing I found to be a bit inconvenient is the fact that you can't change the volume while the device is in the case. Since the microphones are covered once your device is inserted into the case, the volume sounds quieter than when it is outside of the case. However, this is something that I am aware of after using it a few times and have gotten used to.
I also had a chance to download one of the FREE Fisher-Price activity apps: Where is Puppy's Nose? I thought this simple game had some great features. In the short playtime, babies can learn about different parts of the body (nose, ear, eyes, mouth, foot, tummy, hand & head) and where they are located on the puppy and kitty (the hosts of the app activity). Your little one can have fun turning the device up, down, and all around, since the app reacts to movement, taps, and swipes! Plus, this app also features sounds and music to get your little one moving.
To make the app even better, I'd love to see it be a little longer - possibly by adding a few more body parts (e.g. arms and legs), or adding another character. I'd also love to see Fisher-Price create a bilingual or a French version of the game/s. Other than that, I think the app is a lot of fun. Even I was amused!
For parents who let their children use their iPhones or iPods, I think this is a smart choice to keep their devices safe whether at home or on the go! The Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case is perfect for boys or girls and can be used from 6 months and up.
