Supporting small businesses in these tough economic times

Here is a letter I received from a women that I have been talking with, Cheryl Chotiner of That Girl Is...Unique Chic Boutique. The letter is very touching and I hope that everyone will take some time to think about this.

"Certainly during these difficult economic times, your segments that guide viewers to bargains at the big chains or big 'boxes' are helpful to people. But, as a small shop owner, I ask you not to forget the value of encouraging your viewers to support their local businesses.

I own a small beautiful, at this moment struggling, gift store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The space is intimate, 1000 square feet of show space, with just enough pieces of jewelry, purses, sweaters, scarves, soaps, and other treasures for one to find the perfect gift. I have three long time employees. Perhaps, what is of greatest importance is that most of what I sell is handmade by artists whose stories I know; artists whose stories I can tell to the people who visit the store. The work I sell is personal, meaningful, and supports not only me, my employees, but also the lives of the artists.

As you know when we walk into the big chains and big windowless boxes, we walk into a world that lacks warmth, creativity, and imagination. I urge you to find some way to balance your approach to encouraging people to find those great bargains along with encouraging people to support their local businesses and the essential creativity that we need to survive."

  1. Great post! I live in Berkeley and we recently had several small businesses including Elephant Pharmacy http://tinyurl.com/atwajg shut down. Very sad. I try to do what I can to support small businesses in my area.

  3. I am a self employed business owner myself and try so hard to frequent and support local businesses such as Thatgirlis.com
I always go to her site first when I need the perfect gift and she is a pleasure to work with. Everyone I send gifts to loves her merchandise and when I treat myself to a little something it always makes me feel SOOOOO good to have supported thatgirlis and a crucial part of what makes small business owners so attentive, unique and fun to buy from.
    Always a supporter!!!!Fabi

  4. I have shopped and visited Cheryl's since the day the shopped opened. Every time I stop in for a visit, I find myself being greeted by name, as if I'm just stopping by Cheryl's house for a quick visit. Cheryl's unique gifts can't be found in the chain stores all over Pittsburgh. Thatgirlis.com is an extension of her gift as a great business owner. The website is fun for just browsing however, I always find myself having to have something from the site. We need to support the small business owners during these hard times. Cheryl's should be number one on your list!

  5. thatgirlis.com is the virtual small business of a brick and mortar. these days owners are being forced into conquering new territory at a pace reflecting our national economy. Do everyone a favor -- seek out small businesses -- web and storefronts and choose with your purchase to keep the flavor in consumerism. Donna
