Recently I discovered this fabulous series of videos called The Little Travelers. This series is based around the concept of raising global children. Angelina Hart and her two daughters starting travelling when her daughters were ages 3 and 5. Their first trip was to Japan. Only a week prior to this trip, Angelina decided to document the trip from her daughters' perspectives. Angelina said, "I know a lot of people will never have the opportunity, funds or desire to go visit Japan themselves yet might still enjoy the experience of seeing a deeper insight into the country learning more than the things we all already know- chopsticks, sushi, bullet train." As the trip unfolded, Angelina continued to document their experience in Japan.
Review
I had the opportunity to review the Little Travelers Japan DVD. When I found out I was going to be able to see this video for myself, I was quite excited. Eight years ago I traveled to Japan as an exchange student with a group of students from my school. It was a wonderful experience and ever since I left, I have missed it immensely and I yearn to go back someday. I was looking forward to viewing this DVD because I figured it would bring back a lot of good memories, as well as allow me to see things again that I had seen and experienced while I was there.
This DVD definitely lived up to my expectations…and actually surpassed them. Not only was I able to connect with the video since I had also participated in many of the things that the girls did, but I also discovered a whole list of things I wish I could have experienced as well. Those things that I wish I could have experienced are now on my list of things to do when I travel back to Japan someday.
I thought this video was wonderful because it demonstrates how much we can learn from children; their point of view can be so different from ours. I love that this video is completely narrated by Angelina's two daughters. I think that this will increases other children's interest in the DVD and in exploring other places and cultures. One thing that surprised me about this video was how daring Angelina's daughters were (especially with all the new food). Finally, I love that their videos live by the following quote, “Follow our adventures, and see how friendship becomes our common language.” After you have lived in a situation where you cannot speak the same language as most of the people around you, you will realize how true this phrase really is.
**Trailers for all the videos can be found here.

My husband and I were planning on a trip to Japan before we got pregnant with twins. I think what I would like most is the culture and seeing the little ones experience it.

I think Scotland would be a great destination for the next DVD.

I would chose the Bali DVD for my grandson. I could use it along with my own photos from our travels in the South Pacific to show him about the culture and people. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI would like to see a DVD on Australia. There is so much there to learn about...the landscape, the animals and plants, the people, the history. It's a great place to travel and I hope we can take our grandkids when they are a little older.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see The Little Travelers - Bali because I have always wanted to visit.
ReplyDeleteThank you!

I would choose the British Isles DVD because a horse caravan sounds like fun. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI have an inquisitive 4 year-old granddaughter who loves to travel. She would identify with these girls and love this series. I would choose Japan for her first, because the country was a home for my family when my father was stationed there many years ago.

ReplyDeleteI'd love the Japan DVD, probably for my Japanese friend to have for her daughter.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see them do one on Greece- I've always wanted to go there and love travel videos of it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! Wish we had the funds and time to spend our lives visiting around the world. I think my grandchildren would like this Dvd adventure. Tough to choose which one though. I think I'd start with Bali. I think they'd love the monkey thief! Hopefully that won't scare them about monkeys forever....The place is so exotic looking.
ReplyDeleteI would like to win the British Isles DVD. I have been to England and Scotland, so I could evaluate the first 2 destinations on that DVD well. I am also curious to see the part of the DVD about Ireland, where I have not yet traveled! I would also like to see the Japan DVD since I have also been to Japan.

The British Isles sounds interesting and should be educational as well.
ReplyDeleteI would like the Bali DVD. I just think the more exotic the better. I think it is important to expose children to places that are less known in our North American society is so important. I want my children to experience other cutures and understand that despite what may seem extreme differences there is always a humanity that is universal and that there is never just one right way to live!!
ReplyDeleteI would love the DVD about the British Isles. I homeschool and we are studying Europe in geography. I would want to get from this dvd a learning tool for my daughter. I think she would really appreciate a child's view of the British Isles.

I had a roommate from Japan when I was in college, so I'd probably get that one to share the culture of my friend. But I might just let my children watch the trailer and let them choose.

I would love the one for Bali. Its the one country that I know nothing about so this would be a fun learning experience for all of us.

I would love to get the "Little Travelers Japan". My children and I have been studying Japan and California, after reading the book "Grandfather's Journey" by Allen Say. I know that we would love to see a DVD of Japan over the picture books we have looked through.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!

I would choose the British Isles DVD if I won, because in a couple of months, I'll be moving to England and I'd love to share the DVD with my little cousins in the states so they would know about where I am...and maybe begin to plan a visit!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Harry Potter books/movies, so I think I would get a kick out of seeing the portion of the DVD where they visit the real Hogwarts!
I think it would be great if the Little Travelers headed to Australia! It's so large & spread out that it would be pretty hard to see it all on a normal family vacation. We spent 10 days there this summer and barely made a dent...it would be nice to get a more comprehensive look on the DVD!
ReplyDeleteI also look forward to the DVD of their recent trip to Iran. It was really interesting reading the account of the trip on their blogs.
Hello, This is a wonderful giveaway prize contest!

I would love the British Isles one! I like that it is narrated by the children. This is our heritage and I would love them to see these countries from a child's perspective. It would also give us ideas for what to do for activities to study those countries. What fun!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the Bali video. The people's costumes are so colorful and the dances sound amazing. I am a homeschooler and my kids would really benefit from this DVD.
ReplyDeletewalterandtavita@att.net
The next stop should be Ukraine. That's where I am from. Ukraine is such a colorful place to visit and a very humbling place as well. It has a wide range of wealth levels like any other country. The little girls would look adorable in Ukrainian costumes.

I want them all, really, but I think I'd start with Japan since our family hopes to make a trip there someday. I'd love to see what the experience of visiting Japan was like for children, and for my children to see that there's a lot more to Japan than anime, Pokemon, and sushi. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see the little travelers go to South America, to Africa, to Scandinavia, to Siberia... I can't decide on specifics, but there are so many fantastic places the list could go on and on...
ReplyDeleteWell, my first pick would be the Japan one...but I also think we'd enjoy The British Isles, where our ancestors are from.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
