I feel that adoption is a common process that affects all of us in one way or another. It may not affect you or me not on a personal level, but I am sure all of us know of someone who has gone through the adoption process or has been adopted themselves.Did you know that “there are [currently] more than 118,000 children in the United States public foster care system awaiting adoption?” Even though every day more children are adopted into loving homes, more continue to wait to find that special family.
Once a family adopts a child, it is an ongoing, life-long process of learning and adapting to the new family situation. Since these families often experience unexpected situations and may require help along the way, Jockey began Jockey Being Family™ in 2005 to help families deal with the life-changing event of adoption.

Jockey Being Family™ strives to strengthen the bonds between the members of adoptive families to ensure they have a successful transition and future. To make this possible, Jockey Being Family™ works with a wide range of non-profit organizations across the United States. In addition, Jockey works to connect these families with resources plus various supports and services (e.g. respite care, support groups, etc.). Through the Jockey Being Family™ program, the hope is to eliminate the chance of failed adoptions, which can cause many children to be put back into foster care.
One is example is Jockey’s experience with non-profit organizations is with the Adoption Resources of Wisconsin (ARW). “Jockey partners with ARW through the Home to Stay Backpack program, designed to provide newly adopted children in Wisconsin with personalized backpacks. Jockey employees gather each month to create the backpacks, which are delivered as part of ARW’s monthly Home to Stay caseworker visits. In 2005, Jockey provided nearly 300 children in southeastern Wisconsin with personalized Welcome Home! Backpacks, touching nearly 300 adoptive families.”
Jockey Being Family™ has recently come out with the Jockey Being Family™ Bear. This bear is 11” x 5”, super cute, cuddly and comes with it’s own red backpack. This bear is sure to bring joy to any child. With the purchase of each bear, Jockey has agreed to “donate $3 to the Debra Steigerwaldt Waller Foundation for Adoption to charities supporting adoption.” After adopting (purchasing) the Jockey Being Family Bear, you have the option to give it a name and print of a personalized certificate. This can be done here.
To help spread the word about Jockey Being Family™, Jockey has offered to give one of their new bears to one lucky reader! Please read all the details below.

ReplyDeleteI think it's great that they are supporting adoptive parents for successful futures. We have friends that are trying to adopt currently, I will certainly let them know about this.
ReplyDeletebeverly.stein2@gmail.com
after the grueling process of adoption, there is still that problem of maintaining relationship between the adoptive child and parents and the family that they make up. and that's when Jockey Being Family comes in.
ReplyDeletei've not any adoption stories of my own but i listen to other peoples adoption stories and i know that the adoption process itself is tough, what comes after is tougher. before this, i didn't know that there is something or someone like Jockey Being Family who provides support in the aftermath of the adoption process.

I love how they work with and help families that have adopted children.
ReplyDeleteMy husband was adopted when he was 2 years old by his uncle. He grew thinking that was his biological father and was never told about the adoption. He never knew that his aunt was really his mother until he was 20. He was shocked and hurt that they had lied to him for so long and wondered why they didn't tell him sooner.

Funding Post-Adoption Services, In 2005, they provided over $100,000 in donations plus in-kind support totaling over $300,000. They also provide post-adoptive families with the critical support, resources and information they need to remain strong and successful.

2) I wasn't adopted but adoption did affect my life. My best friend was adopted and I was so jealous of her. I told her once she was so lucky that her parents had picked her out of thousands of special little children and my parents were just stuck with me!

ReplyDeleteI really like the program as a whole. Support for families who are going through adoption is extremely important. I have gone through the process, but on the other end. I gave my first son up to a very loving family, and thankfully, everything is still going really well. I still talk to the family and my son, and we get together at least once a year, with several letters sent back and forth throughout the year.
ReplyDeleteI like that the program will support families going through this process, and I like that the support lasts long after the adoption is finalized.
Thanks for the great giveaway! this one made me cry :)

This is an amazing program! Adoption is a part of my heart as i was in foster care from 9 mo. of age until i was 18 months old when i was adopted into a family. Now, 33 years later, my spouse, teenage son and i are adopting my husband's sister's 4 month old baby and he will be coming home sometime next week after many weekly visits with him since he was 29 days old.
ReplyDeleteI like that they are helping families post-adoption. I thing that it is great that they not only are donating funds, but they also have employee volunteers. Adoption is so wonderful, and I am glad Jockey and its employees are helping families grow stronger.

I love that Jockey is concentrating on post-adoption services..I wasn't aware that 10-15% of adoptions fail resulting in children being placed back into the foster-care system..that's a real heartbreaker. I think it's great they're doing something to reduce that number.

ReplyDeleteHow adoption has affected my life: Well, I am adopted, as is my older brother. When we were babies in the 1960's. Closed adoptions then, we ended up with wonderful parents and had the "ideal" life, so I would say adoption has always affected me

ReplyDeleteThis makes me think back to a young neighbor when I was growing up. After he found out that he was adopted, his teachers called in his parents for a conference. Seems he was making all his classmates feel bad by telling them that his parents picked him out, but theirs didn't have any choice, and got stuck with them, whether they wanted them or not!
I think this is an amazing program. I love that they carry through with post adoption support. Many people stay with the initial adoption, but leave when it is finalized. Glad to see such a large corporation care so much.
